Assistive Tech Grant

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) is the premier nonprofit organization serving educators and education leaders committed to empowering connected learners in a connected world. ISTE serves more than 100,000 education stakeholders throughout the world.

Luci McCausland, Mary Beth Pummel, Jill Kimble and I applied and received an Assistive Tech Grant from CSPDIV this spring and it gave us the opportunity to attend ISTE in Atlanta. There were 16,000 attendees from all over the world. There were only 5 of us from Montana. It was an amazing opportunity to network and learn from Ed Tech leaders.

One of the most influential session presenters was Kristin Ziemke. She is also the co-author of Connecting Comprehension and Technology. She shared video clips of her 1st graders in Chicago responding to her Reader's Workshop mini-lesson read aloud on iPads using Edmodo. I was floored by how quickly they were able to respond and how much they were able to share about the book. They were completely engaged. It was a great example of how teachers can blend technology right into a lesson they would already be teaching. Kristin then projected the back channel so the students could keep track of students responses.

We also met a young man, Travis Allen, who was amazingly inspirational. He started ischoolinitiative.org which is an organization with the vision to revolutionize the American education system with technology and life long learning. Travis is a sophomore in college now, but he started this initiative when he was 17 years old. He spoke to us about the importance of reimagining learning and allowing students to become a mobile learners. Check out his website.
